An urban adventure!
by Phlebas2
Though free entertaiment is sort of at a minimum, during the daylight hours South Bend provides and interesting "Urban Excursion" There are still several historic buildings to see, including the newly renovated Morris Performaning Arts Center, and the ajoining ball room. Several Musuems ($) the parks (free) attractions like The Silver Hawks Stadium ($), Football hall of fame($) and numerous riverwalks (free).
Not a very impressive sight though, to the seasoned traveler, or former residents, it is tolerable overall for a brief visit. BUT it has an undue share of unpleasant aspects for such a small city. Rampant crime, an unfriendly attitude, and an overall feel of neglect to name a few..
I can't really recommend a casual visit.. GO IN WITH A PURPOSE.. ET out as cleanly and safely as possible. I miss hanging out at the Planter's Peanut Store on Michigan St. and smelling the peanuts roasting, samples at the Fannie May Candy Shop, Drinking a fountain Coke at Kressge's, Riding the escalator at Robertson's, A trip to Innwoods to look at crocks and corks... Sadly none of these things from my childhood remain. So I guess I'l just say I miss South Bend. :(
In 2007 I went on the "Dumpster Tour South Bend".. comonnoly known as DTSB
Its where the businesses go..
Fannie May and Van Horne left via this route and found themselves mysteriously transported to a Magikal New World know as Heritage Square, MIshawaka.. A place that looks like a Movie Set downtown from the Ghost Whisperer

Irish Marching Band
by raulaf
According to the stadium announcer, Notre Dame's marching band was the first college marching band in the country. I've seen and heard a lot of marching bands and in my opinion ND''s is one of the best. One of their traditions is to play their opponent's fight song before the start of the each football game. Very cool and classy! Bruins fans at the game really enjoyed ND's band rendition of UCLA's "Sons of Westwood."
Notre Dame University

If you are driving between Chicago and Detriot and need a break consider stopping in South Bend to see Notre Dame University . Notre Dame has a beautiful well kept campus. The attendant at the gate may ( will) suggest you visit the Alumni Office . In fact he says the Alumni Office wants to see you . Just tell him you came to look at the church or better still tell him you went to USC .
