Blood Drive
by Toughluck
About every 2 months there is an American Red Cross Blood drive somewhere in town. Locations have come to sponsor the drives on a rotating basis. Each location will host a drive every 3-4 months, which is the minimum time between donations by a single person. Other locations provide space for emergency drives when there has been a major disaster somewhere in the world or other disaster. There is never a shortage of donor in Valparaiso.
Pronunciation Guide
by grkboiler
It seems only locals or Northwest Indiana natives can get it right. It is pronounced:
val-pa-RAISE-oh
NOT:
val-pa-RISE-oh
Or you can do what we do - call it "Valpo" for short.
Valparaiso Library
by Toughluck
Actually, the Porter County Library, but the main building is in Valparaiso, with branches in Kouts, Hebron, South Haven, and Portage. It's a great system with books, movies, music, and paintings for loan. You can access the internet for research or delve through hundreds of reference books. You can catch up on the news of the day, the week, or the century. All for free to the patrons of the library.
For the family researcher, the geneology room is full of materials that you can trace your ancestors back a hundred or several hundred years. It's among the top geneology centers in the country. I've heard that Allen County (Fort Wayne) Public Library is #2 in the nation, and I rate Valpo as better, since I've been to both.
The County Library system includes branches in South Haven, Portage, Kouts, Hebron, and the book mobile.
The Fly In
by Toughluck
Every August Porter County Airport hosts a fly-in of World War II aircraft. It occurs just after the Oskosh Air Show in Wisconsin. Each year, it varies as to what aircraft will arrive. Inevitably, it's a hot day, 90 degrees and hotter in the sun.
If you're around, it's a chance for you to see and get inside the planes that defeated Hitlers Luftwaffe.

Grand Kankakee Marsh County Park
Synopsis
Marshes, oxbows, the river itself add up to lots of northern Indiana swampland, which is a lot more attractive than it might sound to some. Wildlife is abundant, especially birds. Take a slog through what's left of the swamp.
LaSalle Fish and Wildlife Area
LaSalle Fish and Wildlife Area
There are a couple of small remnants left, and this F&W area preserves one of them. The river is still ditchlike, but some of the bayous and oxbows are left to give a feel for what it was like before the "improvements". There are paths and service roads that lead through the property, but the best way to see it may be by canoe.
