Sunset on the Loess Hills
Council Bluffs is located on the Iowa side of the Missouri River. It is known as the eastern starting point of America's first transcontinental railroad. Because of its connection to the railroad, it's thought of as an industrial, blue-collar town. And Council Bluffs residents are the butt of many jokes by people in Omaha (the city on the Nebraska side of the river). The area has a lot of steep, Loess Hills. What are Loess Hills, you may ask? Well, even if you didn't ask, here it is:
Loess hills were formed between 14,000 and 24,000 years ago when huge glaciers made their way through the midwestern area of the United States. As the glaciers melted, huge amounts of dirt were washed into the Missouri River Valley. When the glaciers froze again (those COLD Iowa winters!), all of that clay-like dirt was exposed and blown into high bluffs by strong winds. I know...what a fascinating story! Ha ha. It's kind of interesting and the bluffs are pretty. If you decide to visit Council Bluffs, you can check out the Squirrel Cage Jail...a jail with cells shaped like pie pieces. It's one of the only three jails left in America that look like a "Lazy Susan" serving tray! :-) More information about Council Bluffs
