WAR MONUMENTWabash Trace - Walk, Run, Bike
The Wabash Trace Nature Trail was formed on the old railway line heading S/SE out of CB. You can go as far as you like but it stretches 60 miles! It can be accessed at a few county road intersections and the small SW Iowa towns. The scenery is beautiful and good exercise through the Loess Hills.
The trail is for walkers, runners, and bikers and there are side trails for horses or mountain bikes if you want! The best way to see it is on bike in my opinion. I suppose in the winter you could take snowshoes or cross-country skis on it.
The first town you go through is Mineola, (9.6 miles from CB) a nice little town. Stop at the Mineola Steakhouse for refreshments. If you can go about 4 miles further, you'll make it to Silver City. Have someone meet you there to pick you up if you don't want to make the return trip.
The website says there's a daily pass of $1 or a year pass for $10. Very cheap.
The official trail head is SW of the junction of Hwy 92 and Hwy 275. It's just south of the OLD Lewis Central High School (now an elementary?). This is the technical trail head with restrooms and everything, but you can ride further north, either behind the school a ways or across Hwy 275 through Iowa School for the Deaf. This trail eventually cuts across Hwy 92 and heads into town.
