Packing List

Posted December 2000: If you are coming here this winter...pack as many sets of clothing as you can and wear them all at once!!! Over the past few weeks our average temperature has been about 5-10F. Girls, bring moisturizer or dry out like a prune! Since there's nothing around to slow it down, the wind gets pretty nasty sometimes, and the wind chill gets down to around -30-40F on a regular basis, so make sure you have as little skin showing as possible! Basically...right now in Des Moines...it's just DANG COLD!!!!! :) 'When Pigs Fly' is when I'll be caught outside in Des Moines in winter wearing anything less than two layers of clothing, a warm winter coat, a scarf, two pairs of socks under heavy snow boots, and two pairs of gloves!

If visiting in the Fall, be sure to attend the Iowa State Fair. Adventureland is a family amusement park with several decent rides...takes 4-6 hours to do everything at a moderate pace. The Botanical Center is a nice place to go and relax.

For those of you who visited this page earlier, I promised I would go out and try to capture some of the natural beauty of Iowa (see travelogue for previous material). And in this way, give you a feel for "my backyard". Well, here's the result.
This spring, we've been to Living History Farms, Chichaqua Bottoms, Red River Creek, Saylorville Lake, and Big Creek State Park. I've decided that all of these qualify for "Off the Beaten Path", so that's where you'll find more information. I've also included a travelogue so I could show more pictures.
This picture is from our annual Art Fair. It also shows a little of our skyline.
