Des Moines is a great small city. There aren't any reasons I can think of that a person would go there for, but if you find yourself anywhere in IA it is usually a pleasant, and generally laid back experience where you encouter friendly people.
If you're looking for a simple buffet with tons of options for menu items, I'd recommend China One. The decor is typical of most chinese buffets, but the staff is quite attentive, and service is quick. The meals are reasonably priced with deep discounts for those whith children, and during lunch time. The sushi is not bad, and I'd highly suggest you try the grill options.
The State Historical Building is great but I have to say it made me feel old. I saw a lot of things on display in the museum I remembered using as a boy. Made me feel like an antique to see that stuff in a museum.
There were also full size dioramas of the animals of Iowa. Here are some wild turkeys in the photo of one exhibit.
