Travel Tips for Des Moines

Saylorville Lake, Grays Lake,...

by moonbeam0140

Saylorville Lake, Grays Lake, The Capital of Iowa, The Blank Park Zoo, Living History Farms, Red Rock Lake, Jazz in July (and free Jazz concert everyday in the month of July) Nolan Plaza at lunch. These are just a few of my favorites. The best steak the US. hands down to no other!!

Downtown Italian Restaurant

by gover about Centro

The name is pronounced Chen-tro. It is owned by Des Moines native George Formaro. The first thing you will probably smell is the coal burning pizza oven making fantastic thin crust pizza that reminds of something you may get in Italy. The restaurant has big windows all around so it feels very light. Last year at Christmas time we had a family dinner there and we could see the snow falling and the Christmas lights outside. My Mom still talks about that meal. I love their Centro Salad with gorgonzola cheese, toasted pecans and balsamic vinegar dressing. I enjoy the pizza and handmade cavatelli (pasta dish). Don't overlook the South Union bread on the table. Mr. Formaro also owns that along with the South Union Bread Cafe next door.

Visit the Iowa State Capitol...

by brdwtchr

Visit the Iowa State Capitol Building. It is beautiful inside with ornate wood work and paintings.
Park below the capital building and you will be near the state history musuem. You can visit both places without moving your car.
