Convenient but crowded
The Embassy Suites is just across the street from Des Moines City Hall, making it ideal for an interview candidate -- even if the weather had been less clement, it was a one-minute commute. I thoroughly enjoyed the complimentary breakfast buffet (I was even able to get a made-to-order omelet with my choice of fillings).
But the Embassy Suites was hosting a major wrestling tournament of some kind, so the hotel was overrun with athletic young people who were exuberantly riding the glass elevators, yelling at each other across the atrium, clustering around the gym and pool, and staying up late. I'm guessing the only reason I wasn't having to elbow them away from the breakfast bar was that I got up at 6:00 AM (my body still being on East Coast time).
Unique Quality: I'd definitely stay here again. This hotel offers a free shuttle service within a two-mile radius (as well as to the airport), and all of the staff seemed to be both friendly and helpful.
There is a nightly manager's reception. The wine was awful and none of the hors d'oeuvres looked particularly appetizing, but it was a nice though.
Riverview rooms run about $20.00 additional per night. The view in the opposite direction is of the Iowa State House, which is well worth seeing.
