Terrace Hill - the Governor's Mansion

Terrace Hill is the now official residence of the Governors of Iowa. However, it was built as a private mansion in the 1870s by one of Iowa's trade millionaires. The house was designed in full Victorian glory by a noted Chicago architect, William Boyington. Boyington also was responsible for the Old Water Tower (on Michigan Avenue) in Chicago, as well as the Hegeler-Carus Mansion in La Salle, IL (which I also visited in summer 2004 - see my page for La Salle).
In order to see the interior of Terrace Hill, it's necessary to take a guided tour, but I wanted to get back on the road so I passed on it. Maybe next time. . .

Our local soccer team competes in the Premier Development League and is currently undefeated. There are special events at many of the games geared specifically toward kids, and the players hang out after the game to sign autographs.

Allison Monument on Capitol Hill

William Allison (1828-1908) served Iowa in the US House of Representitives for 43 years. After his death, his fellow Hawkeyes erected this monument in honor of his public service. The monument was designed - and the sculptures executed - by Evelyn B. Longman - in the nineteen teens. This Evelyn was a woman - which I think is worth mentioning, because the only other female sculptor of her time that I can think of is Camille Claudel.
Longman studied with Lorado Taft and Daniel Chester French, but still would have faced a great deal of prejudice because of her gender. I'd like to know more about her and her work. I think these figures are quite fine - they represent "Peace, Humanity, and Prosperity."
