Salisbury House
by yooperprof
The Salisbury House dates from the 1920s, but it was constructed to resemble English country homes of the 14th to the 18th centuries. It operated both as a museum and as a conference center, and the gardens are a popular place for weddings.
Des Moines Arts Center - Courtyard
by yooperprof
The Courtyard of the Museum is where the three buildings "come together" - so to speak. It's as if it is a collaborative work between Saarinen, Pei, and Meier.
There is a reflecting pool, in the middle of which stands a Carl Milles' piece, "Man and Pegasus." The Swedish artist Milles, born in 1875, was a colleague of Eliel Saarinen on the faculty at the Cranbrook Academy.
My New Home

"A Country Gal's City Home"
I moved to Des Moines technically in April, 2000, but didn't get much chance to really look around until the fall. On Labor Day, I took a drive around to try and get myself better acquainted with Des Moines, and I snapped a couple pics.
This is a picture of the capital building with its gold dome. I hear there are only a couple of true gold domes in the US, and someone told me the other is in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania.
Scattered throughout the rest of the page are pics of the pigs of Des Moines. Well, at least the ones I found. I heard the majority were on display at the State Fair in August, but I didn't get to go. I hope you find them as amusing as I do!
NEW!!! I have added pics from the 2001 Iowa State Fair! One is listed under Must See Activities, and the rest are in a travelogue. Check them out when you get a chance!
