This 1979 steel sculpture is the work of Claus Oldenburg and his partner Coosje van Brugeen.
Another one of their monumental pieces - a giant spade! - can be seen in front of the headquarters of the Meredith Corporation just west of downtown.
Mondos : Great ambiance is great - the food is modestly priced. 2 can eat for less than $40. Wine list and other mixed drinks availible - I suggest the cholate martini. Steak, Chicken, Calamari, Pasta & great desserts. Out door patio with bar. They also have a live local band that plays on the weekends and at night. The have the best Foccia bread I have ever tasted - they bring you freash bread w/ olive oil and asiago cheese with cracked peppercorns - before your meal. I cant say enough anout the place.
all of the above Simpley Chicken Sandwhich: grilled chicken on foccia bread served with grilled seasoned fries. I am simple what can I say - this is probably one of their more boring dishes.
We drove through Des Moines on the second day of our cross country excursion. From the highway, all we really got to see in Iowa is the corn. I know there has to be something just over that next hill of corn...
