People in Iowa are friendly...
by KnotH3ad
People in Iowa are friendly almost to the point of being annoying. Strangers strike up conversations with each other at the drop of a hat and if you sound like you're 'not from around here,' then be prepared to talk for a while. They are also extremely helpful, so if you need directions, recommendations on a place to eat or someone to take a picture for you, they are more than happy to help! Too bad the rest of the world isn't this friendly.
Food of the Gods
by Sagespot about Nick's Bar and Grill
Okay, don't let the name Bar and Grill throw you off - this could be considered a fine dining joint. The atmosphere is always slightly dark and mysterious with great staff and a cute little bar off the restaurant.
Voted the best food in Des Moines several times in a row, its a must see for excellent cuisine.
During the warm months, a great patio offers outdoor seating to watch people and traffic go by while you sip an ice cold brew. All the cocktails here are great as far as drinks go.
For food - the cajun pasta with shrimp is outstanding, and all their salads are like the size of your head, so they are well worth the money.
On Friday they have a crab bisque that is to die for.

"The State Capital City"
We didn't spend much time here, we did sleep here. On our way back from Pella we decided to take a look at the state Capitol which looked very impressive from the highway. Although it was past closing time it was worth a visit. The building itself was nice to look at but the surrounding buildings and monument looked nice. It might not be so nice if during the day when it's crowded, but the area really had a peacefull feeling to it.
