Travel Tips for Iowa City

University of Iowa

by BLSM

Becauseof the U of I, it is possible to see musicals, concerts and plays. Both student productions and touring companies and world class performers. Hancher Auditorium has been presenting shows from around the world for 30 years. The Old Capital in the center of downtown is open to tours.

Iowa City is home to the University of Iowa. The campus is laid out on the side of a hill in some parts, or in others, overlooking the landscape from the top of it. Nice looking campus. The Old Capitol building is also right there, next to the main part of town/on campus.

Scott's Pad

Mom and I stopped at Scott's apartment last week. Mom wanted to see where Scott lived.

A University of Iowa student living the apartment life.

It's better than the dorm.

Memories for all parties.

If you are in mid or larger Iowa City this custom does not apply.
If you travel the farm roads or small towns you will notice everyone waves at you. They will consider you rude NOT to wave back. They are saying "hello/Good afternoon."
If you stay for awhile in smaller town, you will soon realize everyone has their signature wave. 2 fingers only off the steering wheel is popular. Whole hand common.
But you will soon develop your own signature wave. Even found my husband (from downtown Denver) soon fitting into this smalltown custom of saying "hello".

People in Iowa are friendly and will often strike up a conversation with strangers.
If your car breaks down, someone will stop.
If you get lost, they are happy to give directions. Some will even lead you themselves.
The general population of Iowa speaks English. There are areas where Spanish is found, but younger generations speak English if they have not just moved here. In Waterloo, they have flown in many Bosnians there - have recently taken many factory jobs that the locals did not want at IBP meat factory.
Iowa City is more diverse than most of Iowa when it comes to other nationalities because of its' more liberal ideas and colleges and medical school.
Iowa City is also more accepting of peoples sexual choices and lifestyles than other Iowa towns.
We have friends in town whom are Muslims, Asians, African Americans, Causcausians, Italians, Mexican, Pakistanian, Saudi Arabian, and more.
Iowa City is becoming more diverse. It is also a common practice to adopt children internationally here.
My opinion is the norm here is to have 2 children and many are career orientated.
My favorite city in Iowa is: Iowa City and followed by Des Moines. More to do, more diverse towns.
My least favorite: Waterloo (someone will hate me for that opinion-yikes).Higher crime.
The picture is of the Once previous Capital of Iowa for short time. Now is part of undergraduate buildings classrooms.
