Travel Tips for Maquoketa
A Town with a Unique Name
by Stephen-KarenConn
The first log cabin in what was to become Maquoketa was built in 1838 by J.E. Goodenow and Lyman Bates. They originally called the new town Springfield, but later decided to change its name on March 13, 1844 to Maquoketa due to fact that there were already numerous towns and cities named Springfield. Maquoketa is the only town on earth by that name to this day. The name is pronounced muh-COKE-it-uh, and I have been unable to learn what it means - if anything.
