Travel Tips for Burlington

by brdwtchr

At the Coffey County Museum I picked up a brochure about the little country cemetaries scattered around Coffey County. There are 42 cemetaries in Coffey County. The brochure had a map of where they all are located and brief histories. I don't really expect any one to go to all 42 cemetaries. (I don't expect any one to really visit Burlington.) I just wanted to point out that these tiny country cemetaries out in the middle of no place are different than a lot of modern cemetaries I see any more. New cemetaries now only allow flat grave markers so that mowers can easily drive over the top of them. New cemetaries have rules about how long flowers and things can be left at grave side. Here in these little places you'll find flowers growing that were planted by the families of the deceased a hundred years ago and still thriving. You'll see peony, iris, and daylilly in these country plots. The care takers of these places take real pride in managing their little cemetaries. There are no flat markers here and some of the graves will date back 150 years to a time before Kansas was even a state.

The Wolf Creek Environmental Education Center used to be a farm. That is why this barn is there. It is a place for meetings now. There are old farm machines along some of the trails and the observation tower looks like a grain silo.

The 'Old Mill' could use some restoration. It is in Burlington near the river on the North East side of town. There is a map painted on a sign by the Welcome Caboose with local points of interest on it. I followed directions on that sign to find the mill.

by brdwtchr

Coffey County Fishing Lake is also the cooling lake for the Wolf Creek Generating Station Nuclear Power Plant. The lake was open till fishing but since the events of Sept. 11th it has been closed to the public. I don't know at this time if it will be reopened.

brdwtchr's new Burlington Page

by brdwtchr

The towns of Burlington, population 2900, and New Strawn, population 500, are close to one another. Since VT does not offer a listing for New Strawn I'll include here some information about both towns. The photo is of the visitor information center at the corner of Neosho and 75 highway in down town Burlington. There is a Welcome center inide of the caboose where you can find maps of the area and informational leaflets. For information before you arrive in Burlington visit the web site at www.coffeycountyks.org
