Grain Elevators

One thing that you will notice if travelling through Dodge City (or any community for that fact in Kansas) are the HUGE grain elevators. Kansas is known as the Wheat State and the breadbasket of the United States. So in many towns, you will have a grainery which stores the grain that is harvested. Usually there are train tracks next to the grainery that will ship the product to other areas of the country. You always know that you are coming to a town in Kansas from 30 miles away because you will see the tall silos first (this helps especially if you have to pee and there are no rest stops. Just look for the silos and push on the gas! LOL) Thanks Bradbrown for the updated information!
Just outside of town

Just outside of town are some wagon wheel ruts on the Santa Fe Trail, but don't expect much.
Just down Highway 56 out of Dodge is the town of Montezuma and the SUPERB Stouth Museum which has an alliance with the Smithsonian so it's always hosting fantastic national touring exhibits.
Cliff Swallows at Home

These nests are strung along the highway on 400/54 that we took toward Dodge City. They are of Cliff swallows, who build mud cup like nests under the bridge overpasses. It seemed to be a very unique site, and one for a picture to take, or two. They apparently live in groups, and the nests are side by side. Flocks of the birds need to be near a site where there is mud, and they use dolop beads of mud to build the structure. These birds catch insects so like the open area and near fields to swing down and catch them.
Dodge City Zoo

Do not waste your time in going in to the facility. It is small and quite common. They do have a Lama, a tiger, and a longhorn steer. A local guy who was raised here said you need to see Elvira, the old lion. Well I think he was sleeping inside, like the other animals. Only 1-2 were outside. The zoo is SMALL, and in a little park surrounding it to the south of downtown two blocks.
Cornado Cross

This monument was built with donations from locals. It is on Hwy 400 about 6 miles east of town. The cross is 38 feet tall, and was a place where Fransisco Coronado is said to have crossed the Arkansas River in 1541. That is now a small water tributary and disappointing. I am not sure what the hub bub is all about but you can walk up to the cross and see the hill sites. The locals seemed to want to memorialize this site and in 1974 raised the funds to erect the cross. It seems to be neglected in recent years and the foliage overgrown. The picnic tables and shelter area are in disrepair and the path to the cross close up is a weedy path.
