Travel Tips for Emporia

by brdwtchr

On country roads out side of Emporia be prepared to do the country wave. When you pass a car or pickup truck going the other direction give a slight nod and while keeping your palm on the steering wheel open your fingers and give a waving gesture with your fingers. They will wave back to you almost every time. The only ones who don't wave are city people and tourists. You don't want to be mistaken for one of those folks do you?

by brdwtchr

Jones Park is one of my favorite parks in Emporia. What I like about it is the way some of the park has been left in a natural state. This 'sculpture' is easy for kids to climb on. (I think this sculpture looks a bit like some thing a giant concrete dog left behind.)

by brdwtchr

Lyon County Historical Society has a nice little museum next door to the library. The exhibits change regularly. They have more things to display than they have room for so that is the reason for constantly rotating exhibits. Museum is across the street from the big Civic building on east 6th.

Tent sales and sidewalk sales are often good places to find a bargain in Emporia. There is an annual sidewalk sale near end of July when Commercial street will be blocked off to traffic and the down town stores set up racks of goods in the street at low prices.

by brdwtchr

Small park located at 6th and Merchant is dedicated to William Allen White. Mr. White was Emporia's most famous citizen. He was a newspaper editor of some fame before the days of television news. On the wall behind the park you can read examples of his writings on large bronze plaques.
