eat at Montana Mike's. If not for the great food, then for the atmosphere.
When the wind blows just right, the air smells like the Dolly Madison factory just a few blocks down. I just moved to Emporia, so I don't have a lot of memories yet. The mall is small, but it's a nice mall. Just a few of the stores are: JC Penney, Claire's, Maurices, Hallmark, Payless Shoesource, Sutherlands.
Bluestem Farm and Ranch is some thing you should see if you have not been raised on a farm. I shop there at least once a week. There are things at Bluestem you never knew existed. Just prowl around the store and go down every aisle. You are bound to find some thing interesting. There is free coffee and hot tea in center of the store near the bulletin board where people post horses for sale and farm auction notices.
The Emporia Arts Council arranged for some life like statues to come to town about 10 years ago. The statues were part of a travelling art exhibit. Every one liked the statues so well a community fund drive raised money to by a statue. The statue of a boy and girl sharing an icecream stands in front of the local library on east 6th Street.
Kansas Department Of Wildlife And Parks office is in this building north of ESU on Merchant street. It is not a very impressive building but if you are interested in wildlife, camping, fishing, or hunting you should stop in there. They will give you maps, leaflets, and all the advice you will need. There is a program to visit the booming grounds of the prairie chickens north of Emporia. In this office you can sign up to reserve the right to sit in the state's chicken blind one morning to see the birds up close.
Bluestem Hall is about a mile outside of Emporia between the Americus Road and Road F. It is a building that is leased out for parties and special events. I've been to a couple of parties and an auction here.
