Travel Tips for Hays

VolgaGerman

by coloradochris

This area of the world was settled by the VogaGermans that came from the Volga River in Russia. The area has a wonderful german heritage with festivals and attrictions. One of the main events that is a must is OctubreFest or OctoberFest for the English. The festival is a bunch of old VolgaGermans and yound college students drinking German beer, dancing to polka and eating Bearrocks.

A must see,
The festival is once a year and is the last Friday of the Month in Sept.

I'll get some pics of the festival up on this page in a few days.

First United Methodist Church of Hays

by atufft

At 305 West 7th Street, only a few blocks from the university but still in downtown, the First United Methodist Church has a venerable old structure of considerable architectural interest. The church doesn't have a website, so I wasn't able to determine the providence of this massive structure. At the time I walked by, members, a couple had their contribution for a "potluck" celebration. The husband carefully carried a foil wrapped hot dish prepared by his wife.

An "All American town."

"A little of that Western feel"

It was after supper time. The sun was going down and I was walking through the neighberhoods of this town of roughly 20,000 citizens.

It was a perfect night for a walk. Yet - everybody was not outside. What traffic I did see was by cars. Their was plenty of vehicle traffic on this nice evening ; very little foot traffic.

It's a nice place to visit. I couldn't do this for very long. I need to see people walking, biking, getting to know their neighberhoods.

I need my cities.

Is it just me or is it that the further east you go the more they play up their "Western heritage?"

Are Easterners just suckers for the Romantacised West?
