Travel Tips for Hays

by worldglobetrotter

In conjunction with Fort Hays State University's Homecoming celebration, the 2005 Oktoberfest will take place Friday, Sept. 30. Things kick off at Frontier Park at 11:30 a.m. with the annual keg tapping and will conclude at 7 p.m.

The theme this year is "OZ-toberfest: There's no place like homecoming."

There are many booths at Oktoberfest, including the infamous bierocks by many student groups, Oktoberfest T-shirts, and the ubiquitous beer booths. If you're into polka music, you're in luck.

This year, the FHSU Theatre is putting on "Cabaret." My favorite musical of all-time. Unfortunately, I was too much of a chicken to try out for the role of a Kit Kat Girl. *sniffles* Oh goes on!

Residential Neighborhoods of Hays, KS

by atufft

The wealthier neighborhoods of town appear to cluster mostly on the west side, particularly off Hall Street, but these are newer homes of lesser architectural interest. Uptown, particularly along Fort Street leading toward Boot Hill, are only a few homes of architectural interest, while there are a few more of interest along 7th and 8th streets between downtown and the university. One important only relic has been converted into the Mary Elizabeth Maternity Home. Overall, in my first appraisal of Hays, I have to admit that except for the beautifully brick paved streets and available open spaces neighborhood architecture was pretty bland. I will explore more later as I must have missed some important vintage neighborhoods. Meanwhile, these images will have to do as presentation of what one might find during a walk around downtown.

Hays, America

"Wild West Cattle Town Reformed"

What was once a raucous trail head teeming with cowboys, saloons, and dance hall girls is now a progressive community on the high plains of Kansas, home to a fine university, and an agricultural center.

I was fortunate to attend Fort Hays State (then College - now University) for a couple years in the early 1960s, but had not been back to visit campus or the town until a brief stop the summer of 2003. I wish I had more time to look around and to take more photos. Maybe I will get another chance. Especially worthy of a visit is the Sternberg Museum which features a fascinating collection of fossils and skeletons from the dinosaur age.

Hays exhibits a very strong German influence, the area having been settled by Volga-German farmers.
