Travel Tips for Iola

It is a shame this is not...

by brdwtchr

It is a shame this is not a better photo. This picture was taken in early afternoon. The buildings in Iola near the down town area are painted bright colors. In the morning the vivid hues of pale blue, yellow, and pink are brightly lit. When I took this photo the buildings were in shadow.
When you visit Iola you should take highway 54 through town till you see these buildings. Park your car near them and you will be within a short walk of the old jail, General Funston's home, the big clock, and even the county seat cafe. There are some nice little shops in this area as well.

Gas, Kansas is near Iola....

by brdwtchr

Gas, Kansas is near Iola. There is no seperate VT page for Gas. The residents of Gas seem to have a sense of humor. The water tower is painted red like a can of gasoline and it says 'Gas Kan' instead of 'gas can'.

In this photo is the old jail....

by brdwtchr

In this photo is the old jail. Much like the jail in Nevada, Missouri this was built strong to keep prisoners in. Such sturdy construction has kept the building in nearly original condition without major repairs. The jail is about one block from northeast of the courthouse. Tours are given at 1:30pm and 3:30pm. Contact the people at the history museum to arrange a tour.

Iola, Kansas- Our Hometown

by nannyogg

"Iola, KS"

Despite being a small town (about 6800) in the middle of nowhere (but 2 to 3 hours from large cities in all directions), we fell in love with Iola when we moved here in 2000! This first picture shows our family (minus me, because I took it) in front of our very favorite restaurant, El Charro.

"Beautiful 19th and 20th century homes"

If you love to look at homes built in the late 1800s to early 1900s, you'lll really enjoy a drive around Iola. This house happens to be ours; it was built in 1900 and fully restored in 2003. It's downright plain compared to some of the stunning homes in town!

brdwtchr's new Iola Page

by brdwtchr

Iola is another typical Kansas community. It has that small town feeling. There is a nice little down town area and a museum of local history like so many small towns have. People in the town grow up seeing the water tower and the name of their town above them. Some how a place like this makes people feel they are part of a community and not just living in it.
