It was not this time, but some time ago. The place seems to cater more to a dinner crowd now. The lobby is still unchanged, and nice, but needs spiffing up. The

Beautiful Hotel, great staff, and the hotel bar "The Jayhawker" was a blast
Unique Quality: SUrrounded by nighlife (if you call a 1am last call nightlife) beautiful hotel, quite, understated. A very old building renovated wonderfuly.
Colonel Shalor Eldridge built a hotel here for Free Staters in the late 1850s - and this has been a center of the community ever since. The hotel survived - even though Quantrill's Raiders burnt the place down in 1863, it has been rebuilt, restored, and reanimated many times over the last 140 years.
Many important visitors to Lawrence over the years have stayed at the Eldridge - including Oscar Wilde in 1882. The current building dates from the 1920s.
I never have stayed here, so I won't comment on the quality of the accomodation. I have eaten in the restaurant, Shalor's, several times, but I won't give it a review here because the last time was 13 years ago.
I've not actually stayed at the Eldridge, the grande dame of downtown Lawrence, but I've frequented its Jayhawker bar.
It's one of the most historic buildings in town and is one of about 200 National Trust Historic Hotels of America.
Unique Quality: The Jayhawker bar on the ground floor reminds me very much of an English pub with its polished wooden bar, etched mirrors and huge padded chairs.
Directions: At 7th and Mass in downtown Lawrence.
This is a family-owned hotel that has nothing but suites. There is a nice cafe/restaurant downstairs and the building has been around for over 100 years. Nice touch of class and style
Unique Quality: Great older architecture and personal service.
