'Give me a home where the buffalo roam...' Words from the state song of Kansas, 'Home on the Range'. Here you can see a group of bison on a hill top near sun set. There were once millions of buffalo in Kansas but not any more. This is one of the few places to see them wild this way. The reason you can see them at all is thanks to a man named John Maxwell who drove a small herd of buffalo in to this area in 1859 and established a ranch. I can't imagine how hard it must have been to herd wild buffalo on horse back and then protect them for many years to establish this refuge. He did all that while building a homestead, starting a business, and raising a family (Maxwell's son was the first white child born in Mcpherson county). John Maxwell was a pioneer with vision and determination. You should come here and enjoy the legacy he left for the people of the Kansas.
