This stone marker near highway...

This stone marker near highway 56 shows the routes of the famous trails. The chisolm trail went to Abilene and was used by cowboys herding cattle. The Santa Fe trail was a trade route from the eastern US to Spanish colony of Santa Fe in New Mexico. Santa Fe trail goes to places like Council Grove to the north. My wife has her finger on the approximate spot where the buffalo are.

McPherson lake is near the game refuge. Drive around the lake and you will find this nature trail. The nature trail is a good place to see birds, a beaver dam, and sandhill plums. The trail goes through a plum thicket and the plums look so tastey it is hard to leave them for the birds to eat.
