Another of Overland Park Residents' Favorites
I'm going to let the world in on a secret. But don't tell anybody you heard it from me. Every town or city of any size has its hometown favorite eating places that visitors seldom find, unless taken there by a local. One of those is Fritz's Chili in Overland Park. It's been in the same location since the 1950s (apparently without changing the decor), dishing out their unique chili and little else.
Don't come to Fritz's expecting a tomato-based soup. It's not made with tomatoes (you can pay extra for catsup) and it is served on a plate. When you are seated, tell your friendly waitress that you are a first-timer and she will bring you an instruction sheet. Basically you will be indicating the size of plate you want, with or without beans, and anything you might want to add, like cheese, onions, peppers, etc. There is chili sauce and two choices of vinegars on the table. In spite of driving by this place for years - no decades - I made my first visit in January of 2004. On this occasion, I enjoyed chili (ground beef) with a small amount of beans, and topped that with a side order of cheddar cheese. I added some chili powder, and a dash of vinegar from a bottle that had hot peppers in it. Good stuff.
