Salina Municipal Airport
The world beat a path to Salina in March 2005 when Steve Fossett used the local airport as Mission Control for the recordbreaking Virgin Atlantic GlobalFlyer.
When laden with fuel his unique jet needed an extra-long runway to take off and Salina's airport fit the bill with nearly 3 miles of asphalt. The airport has clearance for emergency space shuttle landings!
You can read more about the mission here: www.virginatlanticglobalflyer.com
It was exciting to watch the live landing on BBC News here in the UK and it was so good to see some of my home state!
There are flights scheduled daily between Salina and Kansas City International if you fancy seeing the runway from Steve's vantage point.
