TOPEKA – A CAPITAL EXPERIENCE

by mtncorg

Topeka was founded in 1854 as a Free State town. The name comes from the Kansa language meaning “to dig good potatoes” and sounded to the original town planners like a good name to call a town. One of the original town men was Cyrus K. Holliday who found the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railroad as well as become mayor of Topeka. His gift of 20 acres for the site of a Capitol was a factor in the eventual decision to choose Topeka as the capital of the new State of Kansas in 1861 – Topeka beat out Lawrence 7,996 votes to 5,291. It was to see the building that was built on Holliday’s land that brought me to Topeka.

brdwtchr's new Topeka Page

by brdwtchr

Topeka is the capital city of my home state of Kansas. Founded by nine frontiersmen and settlers in 1854 the 1990 census figures now list 119,800 people as residents of the city. It is a big enough city to have things to do in it but still small enough to find your way around in without much difficulty. The capitol building stands tall above the skyline in the down town area. From the capitol complex a person can go south on Topeka boulevard to several destinations or go west on 6th street to find other points of interest.
