The downtown area (Central and Main) boasts our Antique county courthouse, the new county courthouse, the city building with it's municipal courts and one block away is the antique building housing the Federal Courts. This picture is of the city hall in early spring.
Uptown Bistro
by AcornMan about Uptown Bistro
Uptown Bistro is the latest installment in what has become quite a trend in the Wichita dining scene, casual cafe-style restaurants serving upscale food (See Il Vicino and Bella Luna for other examples). The menu is a bit eclectic but seems to offer mostly Mediterranean, European and Middle Eastern-style dishes. There were a lot of items on the menu that sounded great, but the meal I chose (chicken schawarma) was a bit disappointing because the chicken was dry. I'd be willing to give it a second chance though in hopes that I might get a better meal next time. For now it gets just three stars based on my one experience there.
Wichita, Kansas
by basstbn
I grew up in a small town about a half-hour drive south of Wichita. Back in the 50s, going to Wichita was really a BIG DEAL. There was so much to see (we thought), and do, and they had all these great stores downtown and people everywhere. The aircraft factories were booming (Boeing, Cessna, and Beech), agriculture was actually semi-profitable for farmers and the city's agri-businesses were doing well.
My, how times have changed. Wichita has gone through tough times due to economic slumps, but continues to hang on. Not that the city is a dump, but the downtown is not exactly bustling, and many consider Wichita to be somewhat of a dirty place. I can't honestly disagree. There are some nice attractions, and the city does have a nice orchestra and some excellent art galleries; however, for most citizens, culture is country music and a beer hall. I do have friends in Wichita, and have met a lot of great people from the city. I hope they will not be offended if not everything I say about Wichita is a glowing recommendation.
Most of my recent visits have merely been an overnight stay while passing through, or to attend the annual meeting of the Kansas Music Educators Association with Nancy. That doesn't leave many opportunities to see much or take many photos, but I'll enter such thoughts and pictures as I have available.
