We spent last night at the Buckhorn Lake State Resort lodge in Buckhorn, KY... (Bowlingtown was the pinpoint location of the lodge on the map). It was actually booked up, but the incredibly nice guy Jason recommended calling back between 11:30-12:00 to see if anyone had had to check out early... we were in luck! We had a room with an amazing view of the lake. I consider the winding mountainous areas we drove through pretty remote... Take an adventurous turn and you may not find a place to turn around! A "Holler" on one side and a mountain on the other. :)
It was a clean room, though very dated... wood walls, ceilings, no fridge, etc. Clean pool, beach area that was surprisingly empty. A marina, dining room (a buffet dinner at around $12.50 per person with a drink)... Fried catfish is one of their specialties and it was awesome! They had a sign up for boat rides on the lake, and offered s'mores by the beach late evening.
Very nice staff!!! Room was around $100.00. Sort of expensive for what you get, but how often are you going to be here? Great internet wi-fi but NO cell phone reception!
Kentucky has introduced a new passport program for state parks! Look into it.
