"My Old Kentucky Home" at Mom and Dad's: Springtime Visits Were The Best

  • Mom and Dad's Kentucky Home - Kentucky
    Mom and Dad's Kentucky Home

By far, the best place to stay in Kentucky (for me) was at my folk's home on Kentucky Lake. They lived in an area called Johnathan Shores, which was a combination of permanent homes (such as my folks) and vacation homes (such as my Aunt Bonnie's home). Almost 100% of the home had views of Kentucky Lake.
My parent's home (as you can see from the photo) was located atop a steep incline. Dad enclosed the porch to make an extra bedroom and a dining room; then he added a deck. What views we had! I always slept in that front bedroom that looked out over the lake...ah, yes.
The house was actually built into the hill because the back part of the house with the kitchen, bathroom, laundry, and another bedroom were on flat ground.
It was a large piece of property with lots of trees and a massive yard. My dad mowed that yard and several other people's up until his late seventies!
It was a great place to visit because besides the nice accommodations, the activities offered were excellent!
We often took little journeys around the area to check out the local crafts, go out to eat, see the sites, or just enjoy the Kentucy countryside. Often, we went to larger cities such as Murray or Paducah to shop.
My Dad and I fished a good deal and caught many fish such as crappie, bluegill, and catfish. We also used the pontoon to go for what my Dad called "joy rides" along the shores of the lake to see any new building that was going on. When my folks first moved there, they also had a speed boat for skiing.
Mom, Dad, and I also did lots of walking, and when I say "workout", I mean walking those hills were a real workout!

Some of the best memories of staying with the folks would be the meals that my mother prepared with loving care. She made the best homemade egg noodles and the best Navy Bean Soup ever...oh, yes, and the best green beans with ham. Just writing about it makes me hungry. Allan loved to go to my folks because of the delicious pies that my mother baked. He was especially fond of the Gooseberry Pie. But the very best meal was always the one that ended with my Mom's famous Persimmon Pudding.
When people ask about what it is like to lose a parent, I always tell them that at first you feel like an orphan, and then you realize you are never without them because the warm memories such as the ones I've just described never leave you.

Lake Barkley Lodge at Lake Barkley State Resort: One of the Largest Wooden Lodges in the Nation

  • Barkley Lodge on Barkley Lake - Kentucky
    Barkley Lodge on Barkley Lake

At Lake Barkley State Resort Park, you will find Barkley Lodge, which is one of the largest wooden lodges in the nation. It is so beautiful.
The Park rests on the shores of Lake Barkley, a large man-made lake . The area provides an array of outdoor activities, and Lake Barkley Lodge provides the best of the indoors! (The fitness center is huge and state-of -the-art.)

The lodge is constructed of Western Cedar, Douglas Fir, and three-and-one-half acres of glass. The hotel provides a lake view from private balconies of most of the 120 rooms and four suites.
The rooms are big, beautiful, clean, and luxurious. The service is first rate.
The lodge is open year-round, and you may check it in the late afternoon and must check out by noon Central time.

The Resort Park also has Cottages .

The dining room is beyond compare. There are outstanding views of the lake from the three-story-tall windows that soar to a lofted ceiling! It seats over 300 people for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. I will attest that the food is quite delicious.
The fitness center really pampers you with sauna, wet-steam room, whirlpool, massage therapist, Olympic free-weight room, aerobic classes, nautilus machines, and a glassed-in racquet ball court.
They have a huge marina a half mile from the lodge, and it offers 12 covered slips and 60 open slips as well as a launching ramp. There are fishing boats, pontoon boats, ski boats to rent there.
There's a private swimming pool adjacent to the lodge and a public beach.

I loved the 18-hole Boots Randolph Golf Course.
Two lighted tennis courts are near the lodge, and there is a Trap Range that is seasonal and lighted.
There's also a picnic shelter near the beach, picnic tables, grills, and a playground.

If you like to hike, there are three self-guiding trails for nine miles of exploring nature.

    Ashland Plaza Hotel
  • Tip Rating:
  • Satisfaction:
  • I was really surprised to read negative reviews about this hotel on Tripadvisor. People seem to be split down the middle as to whether or not it's a good place to stay. People have complained of it being dirty and poorly managed, but we didn't have those problems with it. We had other problems with it...We stayed here because of its close proximity to the Paramount Arts center. Although it is the most expensive hotel in Ashland and has a great location downtown, there wasn’t much to set it apart from most hotels of its class. There was a wedding going on the weekend that we were there so it was very busy. The wedding party took over the restaurant and the entire second floor and were quite noisy at night but that’s not what kept us awake. What kept us awake was at two in the morning the cleaning crew came in to clean the roof of the building. I’m not joking. It sounded like we were sleeping under the ocean. For about three hours we heard water swooshing back and forth. Finally, after our third call to the front desk, the offered to move us to a quieter room. Even they were confused as to why the cleaning people came at that time.

All in all, I would stay at this hotel again, simply because it was roomy and we were able to walk down to the theatre. In the winter it would be nice because it would be close to the Christmas lights in the park. It’s probably a step above most hotels in the area, but it’s still not quite on par with other hotels of its class.

    Bennett House B & B- Richmond
  • Tip Rating:
  • Satisfaction:
  • Even when I lived in Richmond less than a mile down the street I STILL stayed at this place. It's awesome. This place is so beautiful. It's a Victorian mansion where the guest is always treated very well. The hosts, Richard and Rita, are wonderful people and go out of their way to make you feel at home. The house was originally built by the Bennett family (William) whose wife was Sarah Clay, daughter to Cassius Clay, a well known emancipationist. Construction began around 1889. Sarah often traveled to Europe with her father (who was also minister to Russia) and used her European influences to stylize the home. Sarah was always my favorite daughter anyway. :-)

The breakfast they serve is fantastic. Very gourmet. The rooms are decorated impeccably. Another neat thing about the house is that the first Saturday of every month they host an English Tea. It's very charming-and more like a full meal. If you're in need of an interesting gift, the parlor has a small gift shop where many tea kettles and what-nots are sold, as well as items by local craftsmen. Sometimes they have specials on the weekend so that the nightly rate also includes tea the next day. I've taken a lot of people and everyone loves it.

Note: if you stay or go to tea, make sure you tell them Rebecca says "hi"! :-)

    Schoolhouse Inn-Benham
  • Tip Rating:
  • Satisfaction:
  • It's sad, but people from Central Kentucky generally don't wander very far into the east. They should because the Schoolhouse Inn is one of my favorite places to stay in Kentucky. I have stayed here twice and both times were memorable. This is an example of a great way to recycle some of the old school buildings in the area. Although tourism is still undefined in the region, the Inn is off to a great start. The classrooms have all been converted into large hotel rooms full of comfortable beds and furniture and tastefully decorated. Some of the rooms have the traditional hardwood floors and resemble log cabins while other rooms have plush carpeting, large sitting areas, and more space in general. Despite the fact that it was once a school, the building is quiet and noise level is kept to a minimum by the good insulation.

There is a restaurant on site. While I haven’t had any meal there other than breakfast, their breakfast is very good. It’s the usual Appalachian fare-eggs, grits, sausage, bacon, biscuits and gravy, etc. Very hearty and I have never left hungry. The grounds surrounding the Inn are beautiful and you’re close enough to walk to the Coal Mining Museum. The old mine that is open for tours is just a short drive down the road. If you’re taking a trip through the mountains and plan on visiting Kingdom Come State Park then by all means stay here-you won’t regret it.

If you aren't in the area to hike and just want to slip away for the weekend then it can be an even better place to visit. Nobody will bother you and you can have plenty of time to yourself.

    Boone Tavern Hotel- Berea
  • Tip Rating:
  • Satisfaction:
  • There aren't a lot of hotel options in Berea, although a few chains have sprouted up here and there. If you want something with atmosphere then I recommend the Boone Tavern Hotel. There's no pool, but the hotel is still the best in town. It's old, and maybe a little frayed around the edges, but it's still classy and has an old world charming elegance. The furniture is handmade and it is within walking distance of many of the craft shops. The hotel has a great restaurant on site, and if that doesn't suit your needs, there's a coffee shop and an Italian place just around the corner. (Although the Italian place is better than the coffee shop in my opinion.)

    Hyatt- Lexington
  • Tip Rating:
  • Satisfaction:
  • I've stayed here a few times, but the last visit was when we stayed at this hotel over Easter (2005) and had a wonderful time. It was almost eerily quiet, which is different considering that I am usually there during concerts at Rupp Arena when the place is packed and rocking, but I welcomed the almost dreary silence of the place. It IS a little dated and could use a renovation to the rooms, but the bathrooms are nice and the views of Triangle Square and Victorian Square are amazing. DeShae's restaurant is right across the street, as well as some great shopping, and it is within walking distance to several other great venues like Bellinis, the Dame, and the Opera House.

If you want to make use of the downtown area then this is a good base. Just remember, if there is a concert going on it can get REALLY crazy.

The hotel has an indoor pool and a fitness center, as well as a fabulous atrium bar. The staff were incredibly attentive and the highlight of our stay was the enormous Easter dinner buffet in the restaurant. I could have eaten for days off of it-fantastic!

Hillbllies and rednecks: STAY WITH THE LOCALS
  • Tip Rating:
  • We had the opportunity to stay with a KY family. Its great to share the customs, traditions, stories about Hillbillies and rednecks, eat the food they eat and learn about the layed back way of living. KY is a place on earth where time does not mean money, ...yet.

DRAWBRIDGE INN: Pool Side Activity Year Round!
  • Tip Rating:

  • The unplanned nature of my stay might have some effect on my perspective and I'm not a complainer as a rule. However, Delta couldn't have found a better solution to our delimma! This Inn was fantastic!

Shuttle service from the airport was not a long drive. Checking in was done quickly and efficiently, which was impressive since our group was so large. This was definitly no Motel-6!

A huge complex designed and decorated in an Old English style. Friendly service, outdoor pool, heated indoor pool, shops and restaruants, and just down the path is the 'Oldenberg Brewery and entertainment complex. THE PICTURE IS OF THE HEATED INDOOR POOL IN JANUARY!

As for their prices, I'd say--from looking at their web page--they are very reasonable, especially for all the amenities they offer.
