Travel Tips for Lexington

If your a basketball junkie,...

by Travelor2000

If your a basketball junkie, go to the Wildcat Museam. Here you will see the history of the University of Kentucky basketball team. If your a horse lover, you can either go to Keeneland or Kentucky Horse Park. I miss the friendly people. They are so polite and helpful.

Furnace Mountain in Irvine

by Krumlovgirl

Furnace Mountain is a Buddhist Temple located in Estill County, close to Irvine. It’s about a thirty-minute drive from Richmond. It is in a beautiful location near the Red River Gorge-where I grew up. It is modeled after a traditional Korean Temple. The teacher is Zen Master Dae Gak, who has been practicing Buddhism for over thirty years. Furnace Mountain us an offshoot of the Buddhist Temple in Lexington, which outgrew itself. They chose the location in Estill County due to the beautiful scenery and the proximity to the mountains. Aside from daily mediations and rituals, they also offer retreats every month. If you would like to visit, they welcome guests. It wouldn’t hurt to e-mail them in advance, however, to make sure you’re not going in at a time when something else is going on.

On a side note, my mother had a student not too long ago from Irvine. When she mentioned Furnace Mountain he said, “Aren’t those the people that worship rocks?” Well, they’re trying to educate people in the community but I guess it’s a slow process.

Sister to a la Lucie

by Krumlovgirl about Nadine's

If you want the quality, but not the price, of a la Lucie, then this is the way to go. Until recently it was owned by the same people, but with a totally different atmosphere. The inside looks like an old diner-albeit an upscale one. We've always had good service there and the food has been terrific. Don't let the fact that it is located in a strip mall throw you off. Some of my faves:

White Lasagna layers of noodles and cheese, with chicken and mushrooms. It is very, very rich so eat slowly. The only bad thing is that sometimes there isn't room left for dessert.

Angel Hair Pasta with fresh tomatoes, basil, and a touch of garlic, topped with parmesan cheese. This one is good, too, and a little lighter.

Thai Cobb coconut shrimp with avocado, cucumber, mango, rice noodles, and a green curry dressing over mixed greens.

Kentucky Horse Park - Horseback Riding

by rexvaughan

If you are an accomplished horseback rider, you might not be interested, but for amateurs or beginners there is a 45 minute trail ride available several times a day. These are quite popular so purchase your timed ticket upon entrance to the park. This also gives you a discount as tickets here are $15 when purchased with the entry and $22 otherwise. Tickets are limited and can be purchased only at the park. Rides There are also pony rides available for kids for only $5 for 3 times around the paddock.
