Travel Tips for Lexington

Drystone fences

by rexvaughan

All around this area you will see farms lined with drystone fences. This is said to be the largest network of such fences in the US. They are similiar to ones you see in the British Isles in that they have no mortar but are stacked in precise manner to maintain their stability. Some were built in the late 18th century by Scottish and Ulster settlers but most were built by Irish immigrants in the early to mid-19th century. A society exists today to preserve this art, teaching a new generation to build them. The one in this photo is at the Kentucky Horse Park and was built in 2000 by some of the masons who have been thusly trained.

For a relaxing and beautiful...

by jtb2inky

For a relaxing and beautiful side trip in Lexington you do not want to miss a stroll through the Lexington Cemetery. I know that visiting the local cemetery does not sound like an appealing idea, but trust me on this one. There are the graves of many locals and a few national figures that you will recognize, including Henry Clay. But the true majesty of this place is the serene setting itself. A short walk through this place in the springtime or fall is a true delight. The flowers and many different types of trees awaken the senses. It is fun to just look at the old gravestones and reflect one the lives of these long-forgotten people. Some of the plots go back into the 1700's. The cemetery is located just north of the downtown off of Main Street.

Beautiful Night

by Krumlovgirl about Bella Notte's

There are many good things to be said of Bella Notte’s. I am a huge lover of Italian food and honestly am really hard to please when it comes to eating it. That’s because I’ve eaten a lot of it and had the real thing in Italy and Croatia and tend to know what I like and how I like it. But Bella Notte’s almost always gets it right. Although it’s located on one of the busiest streets in Lexington and looks like an average chain restaurant from the outside, the quality of the food is always top notch. The minute you walk in the doors the aroma of freshly baked bread, light marinara sauce, and oregano hits you like a sledge hammer. If you’re not hungry when you go there, you will be as soon as your senses take over. The decorations are whimsy and tasteful, the service good, and the menu extensive and reasonably priced. One of my favorite things is the free bread that comes with the meals. I usually end up taking an extra loaf home with me. It’s a little hard on the outside and really soft on the inside and I’ve never had a loaf that wasn’t warm. For main dishes I tend to either go with the pizza margherita or penne arrabiata. The arrabiata is too spicy for some people, but if you like a little kick to your pasta it will definitely add something. Sometimes I order plain penne pasta covered in tomato basil sauce which is a little like a mixture of alfredo and marinara. It’s only listed on the lunch menu, but if you ask for it they’ll fix it anytime of the day. The tiramisu is really good for dessert.

Mary Todd Lincoln House

by Krumlovgirl

This late-Georgian-style brick house is the site of the nation's first shrine to a First Lady. In 1977, the home was restored to reflect the Todd family's residency.

I went here on my first trip when I was in the 5th grade and I was very impressed. It's not a large house and impressive on that level, but they have managed to really recreate the era well. I have worked as a tour guide in several historical homes and tour places like that whenever I can so I find myself a little bit of a snob in that area. To this day I STILL enjoy the Mary Todd house.

On a side note, there is also a connection with Cassius Clay with the Todd-Lincoln house. If you have time check out White Hall in Richmond.
