Horses and horseback riding

by rexvaughan

We are taking our horse loving granddaughter (11 years old) to Kentucky for a few days in July. We plan to spend a good bit of time at the Kentucky Horse Park. We want to get her at least a couple of chances to ride (she is pretty good at it) and just want to know if you have suggestions beyond the Park.

Google Lexington Riding Stables and you will get a list of local places. I'd also check with the Chamber of Commerce and the horse park.

Enjoy!

Check on the Breyer's model horse web site. In July they have the big BreyerFest celebration that your granddaughter might really enjoy.

There are riding stables around. Tourist info has pamphlets on them.

Consider visiting some of the throughbred breeding farms and make a visit to Keeneland Race Track to watch the early morning workouts.

Shaker Village

by Agraichen

Located about 20 miles south of Lexington, just off of highway 68, there is a large restored village originally founded by the Shakers in the early 1800’s. Originally from England the Shakers were a devoted religious sect that initially located in New England. As they expanded from the New England area, they move to the west and south, settling in a number of areas throughout New York, Pennsylvania, Kentucky, and ultimately Florida.

This village “died” in the 1900’s and the buildings were left to ruin. A private citizen’s group formed a nonprofit in an attempt to restore at least some of the history that was held in the “compound.” A number of the key buildings have been restored and the area now operates as a tourist destination. Don’t plan a short trip to this area. The short “one mile” walk around the grounds will take a number of hours as you take in the beautiful grounds and restored historical buildings; some of which are in (almost) original condition.

Fine Dining in the City

by Krumlovgirl about a la Lucie

This is the place that you used to go to whenever you wanted to impress someone. mostly because it is expensive. Since we've had a lot of other nice ones go in during the past few years, they've had to punch up their game a bit. It's still a very elegant dining experience. Some of my favorites:
Artichoke and parmesan souffle $6.75

Fried lump crab cake taco
with avocado, sour cream, and chile sauce $9.95

Sauteed escargot and wild mushrooms
in a garlic red wine sauce on pastry $9.95

Steamed mussels in tomato and white wine broth $7.95

Lobster cocktail with drawn butter
and cocktail sauce $15.00

Barbecue shrimp and jalapeno chiles
served with creamy polenta $9.95

French Onion en croute $4.25

Fresh arugula, strawberries and goat cheese
tossed in a hazelnut dressing $6.50

Sliced fresh mozzarella and tomatoes
drizzled with balsamic syrup $5.95

Pan Roasted Veal Chop
with morel mushroom sauce, sauteed spinach and bleu cheese noodle cake $28.95

Boneless Chicken Breast
stuffed with basil, brie and sun dried tomatoes, baked in pastry and served with hollandaise $17.95

Filet of Beef Tenderloin
served with lobster mashed potatoes, red wine sauce and garnished with onion crisps $25.95

Buttermilk Fried Quail
served with corn mashed potatoes and cream gravy $22.95

Fried Lump Crab Cakes
served on a bed of dirty rice with New Orleans Creole sauce $20.95

Seafood Casserole
lobster, shrimp, sea scallops and mussels baked in a rich mornay sauce $20.95

The Red Mile

by Agraichen

The Red Mile Harness Track is located almost in downtown Lexington. This is the oldest racing track in the region, dating back to 1875. The sign near the entrance of the track at the corner of Harrodsburg Road and Red Mile Road advertises $1.00 beer and $1.00 hotdogs with bourbon and bluegrass.

Live Harness racing is typically from Mid August to late October. Simulcast is conducted year round in the new clubhouse.

Jacobson Park

by sabogg01

Great place to relax on a lazy Sunday afternoon! They have picnic areas and grills set up for you to use. They have a huge playground area for the children. You are welcome to fish here with a license. My favorite thing is the paddle boating. It is $2 per boat for 30 minutes but as long as there aren't lines it is not enforced. They provide life jackets for free. You can stay out until dusk. Great exercise and an inexpensive day out for the family.
