Travel Tips for Lexington

Keeneland Race Course

by Agraichen

Keeneland Race Course, established in 1936 is a National Historic Landmark that still has live racing April through October. This is considered one of the best and most original race tracks in existence in the US. It was used in the filming of Secretariat.

Morning workouts are at 7:00A-8:30AM. The gates open at 11:00AM and Post Time is 1:05PM

Live racing takes place April and October. There is plenty of free parking; General admission $5.00, reserved seats $6.00 weekdays and $8.00 Sat & Sun. Bridle, saddle, boots spurs, crop and a very expensive thoroughbred.

Before I learned of Furlongs.... we ate here

by gkitzmil about Friday's

Our hotel staff could not recommend a good local restaurant or pub in the area. After checking out a few very busy chains we took the table we could get at TGI Friday's. I am a points member with them and the food was pretty good. But it did not satisfy like a local place would have. Next time I'll go to Furlong's !! BLACKENED-CAJUN CHICKEN SANDWICH
Served on toasted ciabatta bread with melted cheddar cheese - it must hvae been the "blackened" part that made it tasty

Long time Vegetarian Favorite

by Ky_Happy_Dad about Alfalfa's

I'm not a vegetarian, so I may not be the best person to give advice. However, this restaurant has been a favorite of UK students for 30 years. Kentucky Monthly magazine named it Kentucky's best vegetarian restaurant in 2003. I like it because of its homey atmosphere. The waitressess treat customers and each other like family.

See web link below (other) for reviews from other vegetarian diners. See Kentucky listings. I've enjoyed the whole grain breads and buckweat pancakes.

Woodford Reserve Distillery

by Agraichen

The drive to the Woodford Distillery is almost better than the destination itself; the landscape is beautiful. The more direct route is to take McCracken Pk just off of Highway 62 as you pass through Versailles (pronounced “VerSales” here) but we took the GPS route which was a bit more “round-a-bout” and led us past the Woodford Thoroughbred Farms property. The detour was well worth the drive.

Woodford is one of Kentucky's oldes distilleries. The tour includes tasting the wares and is well worth the trip. Produced in the "traditional way" with three copper pots.

Tours are offered at 10, 11, 1, 2 & 3 and leave promptly on time.

Arriving at the distillery, we found the parking lot almost full to capacity. This was probably one of the best tours of any distillery I’ve taken. Living in CA wine country I’ve been on numerous tours where the distilling process was explained, but nothing that took me through buildings that were 150+ years old and still functioning. Our guide provided an excellent explanation of the Bourbon “creation” process with details of the differences between Whisky, Sour Mash (AKA Jack Daniels), and Bourbon.

Woodford is the only bourbon that is still made in historic copper pots using a three tier distillation process. They don’t “age” the bourbon for a certain amount of time; their bourbon is “aged” until it meets a specific “taste distinction” which is measured every year after the elixir has been in the barrel for 6 years. Some barrels are over 10 years old and are still being sampled every year. Thus a Woodford Reserve may be 6 or 12 or more years old when bottled as it must meet a certain “taste” benchmark. This is a very interesting technique.

Triangle Park

by sabogg01

Beautiful relaxing park in the middle of the city. It seems so secluded that it is almost like you aren't in the middle of the hustle and bustle. Great place to just sit with your special someone and watch the fountains. Many people go here to picnic or just to read the newspaper. Right in front of the Convention center in case you need to catch a special event. Beautiful place with no charge. Parking can be a bit tricky but there is a free parking garage about 1/2 mile before you get to it on Main street located by the police station.
