One night in Louisville...

by lizzytex

My brother has just invited me to attend a black tie affair in Louisville next weekend. I will arrive somewhat early Saturday and be leaving mid-afternoon Sunday. Since I don't have much time, what is THE one thing to do while in Louisville? I don't know anything about the city but am trying to figure it out quickly!! Thanks in advance :)

Are you going to rent a car? Have you ever been to a distillery? We have family just south of Louisville and the countryside is awesome just to drive. In fact this time of year is probably the best.

There are several distillery plants in the area so take a tour. We did Maker's Mark and were able to "dip" our own bottle in the trademark red wax seal (it is really a form of plastic), but MM might be a little to far for you to drive. You should be able to find others in the area. It is an intersting process even if you don't like to drink it.

There is a bar at the airport just as you clear the security gate upon exit. I can't recall the name but it is owned by a huge well known distillery not to far from Louisville. It was in the wrong direction from where we were going so we did MM. Stop on your way to bag claim and ask about the tour.

BTW: if you need a place to spend time at the airport the food is very good there and security is a few steps away and quick.

You could drive down to Fort Knox and see the gold depository. There really isn't much to see as most is below ground. You can get fairly close, but don't let them see you stop and take photographs.

You should go to the Derby Museum at Churchill Downs, horse racing is what we are famous for!

Travel Tips for Louisville

Louisville is probably most...

by JuliaL

Louisville is probably most famous for the Kentucky Derby, which is held on the first Saturday in May. There is a two-week celebration prior to the Derby itself called the Derby Festival. It's very similar to Mardi Gras in many respects.

The kickoff to the Derby Festival is called 'Thunder Over Louisville'. It's a huge fireworks display held on the riverfront, and it's truly spectacular. There is an air show before the fireworks that is wonderful too.

Another great Derby Festival event is the Great Balloon Race and the Balloon Glow. The race is held in the morning, and is beautiful to watch. After the race in the evening, the balloons are displayed at the State Fairgrounds. They are gorgeous to look at all lit up against the dark sky.

Louisville also makes its home...

Louisville also makes its home to several well-known companies. UPS has a huge hub here at the airport. Papa John's was started here and has their WHQ here too. In fact, John Schnader lives here. Yum!, Inc., the parent company for Taco Bell/Pizza Hut/KFC is located right here as well, not to mention the WHQ for KFC themselves. Those are the ones that are coming to mind now.

Asian Pearl

by dzni about Asian Pearl

This is pretty authentic Chinese food. I mean, it's still Americanized, but some of the flavors seem to be closer to what is found in China. The waiters are very attendant to your needs too. Buffet ;) They may have more, but you can taste more foods this way

More coffee

Another favorite coffee stop for me. If you want to sit and relax, you can't beat the swank Prospect, KY location, just to the north of Louisville. It's located at the corner of US42 and River Road. Another good location is on Frankfort Ave. Prospect one serves wine too! :)

Kentucky Derby Museum

by last_train

The Kentucky Derby Museum is a great way to learn about the Kentucky derby. They have many interesting exhibits that are both "hands-on" as well as informative. You can watch any of the modern derbies at the click of a button. You can also learn about the previous winners and their riders. There is quite a history to the Kentucky Derby and this museum has it all.

One of the highlights of the museum is a 360 degree movie the provides a "you are there" feel to it. It has all of the festivities as well as the race itself.

In addition to the museum admission, you can purchase an extra barn and backlot tour. This van tour allows you see all of the trainers' barns and the backside of the track. The van stops on the backside and you are allowed to walk around the viewing platform near the start of they 1 mile races.

There is also a free walking tour that allows you to see the finish line, grandstands, and other grounds. It is very fun to walk around this historic structure when it is empty. You can really appreciate all of the history that has been made here.
