Travel Tips for Louisville

Pay Your Respects to Col. Sanders

by TravellerMel

Col. Harland Sanders, famous fried chicken magnate (figurehead, at least) is buried at the Cave Hill Cemetery, along with his beloved wife Claudia. My brother expected the headstone to resemble a bucket of KFC, but instead it is a bust of the good Colonel.

Cave Hill National Cemetery. Don't enter the cemetery by the Baxter Ave entrance - that is for a separate part of the graveyard. Use the entrance on Grinstead Drive instead. As you enter the cemetery, turn right and follow the yellow line; it terminates at the grave.

Sophisticated work of art

by Joseph69 about Proof

Proof must have been one of the best dining experiences I had the pleasure of experiencing. Jackie, Anita and myself had a wonderful lunch. We wanted to try each of our orders as it was the first time for all of us, and the staff had kindly cut each meal up into 3's and served it on seperate plates for the three of us to enjoy.

It's not just a place where you enter the restaurant, sit at your table and look straight at the menu. The whole place feels like an art gallery. There are great photos, paintings and a unique video on one of the walls of a guy having soup, and surrounding it is a painting of a table. Looks pretty cool! Even the toilets are interesting! The mirrors at the wash-basins have tiny screens with eyes that are looking around giving you the sensation that you're being watched!

When I went to the bathroom, the girls had organised a Mint Julep using the mint leaves we had bought the night before at the supermarket. So on my return, there was a delicious cocktail waiting for me to be enioyed with the mint leaves! Yummy!

To enter the restaurant itself, you must enter via a little musuem, making the experience all the better. It's America's first museum which is dedicated to hosting contemporary art from the 21st Century.

There is also a 91 room hotel all attached to this fine site, which is surely giving the historic downtown district quite a lift! I loved the whole meal! The menus have a large influence of Italian cousine mixed in with their own style.

del Frisco's

by dzni about del Frisco's

This is the best steak I've ever had. Screw Ruth's Chris or any place like that. This is the best, right here. BUT, it's really expensive, so be expected to pay for each individual item you order. STEAK

Churchhill Downs

by davecallahan

ChurchHill Downs is more than just a race track. It is an icon of the racing industry. Kentucky Derby and Irish Sweepstakes are probably known world-wide as racing. And when you visit "The Downs" you will be impressed.

Our reunion group got to go in The Downs on a non-racing day and the group could go where most people are not allowed. The tour guide spieled about the history of racing (and later a rundown of the momentos in the Equine Museum) and the history of The Downs and the famous horses that ran there. The race track is huge and beautifully built. It is sort of an ampitheater and the main characters are the horses and their jockies. There are special booths for exclusive use by important individuals (owners and high-rollers); there is a dining hall better than the one my daughter had her wedding reception at. There are paddocks and stables for the prima-donnas (the horses) and a work house for the workers (jockeys, stablemen, trainers and handlers). There is a small medical center for the vetinary care.

I am not a racing fan (I have no idea how much a bet is or what it pays or even what the entrance fee is) but the tour was fascinating. If you get a chance to get an inside tour, take my word and go for it.

For all other details about The Downs you better see the website listed below

Parks... namely Cherokee,...

by dzni

Parks... namely Cherokee, Seneca, and Iriquois Parks.
Well, these are just some neat places to go relax or ride a bike or walk or such. Seneca has a playground, tennis courts, golf course, a paved trail. Cherokee is bigger and has several large hills and a scenic loop you can 'recreate' on. ;) Iriquois has a pretty large hill, from who's top you can see a lot of Louisivlle, namely the skyline, from a distance.
