Travel Tips for Louisville

Falls of the Ohio Interpretive Center

by Tom_Fields

Learn about the history and geography of the Ohio River at this state park on the Indiana side. The Ohio River was formed by glaciers during the last Ice Age.

Louisville began as a small settlement along the rapids of the Ohio River, Pioneers had to remove their boats from the river, haul them overland to a safe spot below the rapids, and place them back into the water. So a camp grew up along the riverbank, which George Rogers Clark officially named Louisville, in honor of the French King Louis XVIII (that's because he had helped the new country to defeat Britain in the Revolution).

This park is across the river from Louisville, just below the McAlpine Dam. The address is:

201 West Riverside Dr.

Lynn's Paradise Cafe

by dzni about Lynn's Paradise Cafe

Extremely eclectic restaurant that supposedly serves great, unique food. Alright, to be honest, I was not that impressed with the ambiance, the food, nor the long wait that can traditionally be expected outside this restaurant. HOWEVER, it is raved about by most people here, so I thought I'd include it for reference. Also, Lynn is a very learned chef, from New York I believe, but I could be wrong. Anyway, check this place out at your discretion. ;) I went there for breakfast (cheese grits weren't bad).

by dzni about Starbucks

We have so many Starbucks here now, it's ridiculous. Anyway, they're mainly all over the east end of the city, but there's one downtown at the Convention Center and one at the airport in the rotunda. Oh, and two of them on Shelbyville Road are drive-thrus, which I find to be fairly unique.

Get Live!

by ATXtraveler

Downtown Louisville did a great job marketing its main entertainment district by renaming it Fourth Street Live! Essentially it is a blocked off street between Liberty and Muhammed Ali Blvd in the heart of downtown. There are several restaurants and clubs, as well as a smaller food court and shopping.

I was there on a Tuesday night, which was not nearly as full as I assume it gets on weekends, but the following night I was watching the news and they had a full crowd there to watch the official draw for positions at the Kentucky Derby!
