Evenings in Louisville

by etfromnc

I will be visiting Louisville for the first time in 15 years from March 21-28. I will be working during the weekdays but would love any advice as to what might be going on either of those weekends and in the evenings. I will be working at the Humana Waterside Bldg., 101 East Main St. but still have flexibility as to where I will stay, eat, and play. Thanks!!

I don't think there's much going on then, but...
Here are some good websites to visit: http://www.louisville.com/ME2/default.asp

They have a calendar (on the right side) with various happenings around town.
Or try:
http://www.louisvillescene.com
Or
www.leoweekly.com

Any other questions, please ask!

Travel Tips for Louisville

Thunder over Louisville

by MatthewMetcalfe

Thunder over Louisville kicks off the two week long Kentucky Derby festival which culminates in the Kentucky Derby (of course). Thunder is the largest fireworks display in North America and is absolutely stunning to watch. In addition to the Fireworks there is a huge airshow. The Chow Wagon offers a variety of heart clogging food from Smoked Turkey Legs and Funnel Cakes to Corn Dogs and Bar-B-Que. It's all good but the crowds are massive.

The best hotel to watch from is the Galt House. If not in a hotel though the closer you can get to the second street bridge, the better.

For a decent 'mountain bike'...

by John195123

For a decent 'mountain bike' trail, take the Gene Snyder to the Crestwood exit (US 22) and head away from the city for around four miles until you come to a sign on the left side of the road-at the bottom of a hill- Briar Hills. Turn left and follow the road to the parking lot, which will soon become visible. Park there and start your ride. Trails start from multiple points.

Briar Hill Park

52 Acres located on East Orchard
Grass Blvd.
2 Picnic shelters with restrooms
2 Sand volleyball courts
2 Grass volleyball courts
1 Basketball court

Ferd Grissanti's

by dzni about Ferd Grissanti's

Really good Italian food, white tablecloths, high-class sort of establishment. Went here for my prom. My favorite thing is the twice-baked mashed potatoes, or something like that. They're good and come with several of the meals. Anything.. it's Italian ;)

The Holiday House Tour

by shrimp56

I was fortunate enough to be visiting my friend who lives in Old Louisville and took me on the house tour. I've added a few of the pictures from the outside [none allowed inside] to this tip and will add more text later. We made it though 7 of the houses I think. There is also a nice Christmas decoration/gift center in the basement of The Conrad/Caldwell House where you bought your tickets for the tour.
.
The variety of the approaches to restoring/renovating an old Victorian house varied as did the ways of dressing up the house for the tour. Some houses were just very nicely done with the usual Christmas decorations you would expect. Others were "htemed" in color or kinds of objects. I found those a bit overwrought. After a while I lost interest in the living rooms and bedrooms and really homed in on how the kitchens and bathrooms had been redone -- when we were given access to then.
.
If you find yourself near Louisville for this event I highly recommend that you take the tour.

Six Flags Kentucky Kingdom

by V_Minx

Amusement park fun for kids and adults right in the heart of Louisville. Unless you're blind, you can't miss see the roller coasters from the highway.

I haven't been here myself yet, but I hope to soon.
