Need a Marina on the Ohio River!

by MrsBoatDoc

My husband and 3 friends are traveling on the Ohio River. Today 5/10 they are in the area of Alton, just below Leavensworth. We need to know if there is any Marina's or Public Docks that these guys can tie off too and either get gas or walk to get gas. They are sorta in a desperate situation. We would appreciate this info as soon as possible. I have searched online and cannot find anything. And the Charts most of the numbers are invalid. PLEASE if you can look in your local phone directory and find anything below the Lock in Louisville and between Alton and Louisville would be very helpful.

Thanks
Donna

http://www.mvr.usace.army.mil/navdata/ohiordks.htm has docks and phone numbers

http://www.ohiodnr.com/watercraft/boat/opfg.htm has the Ohio RIver public facilities in adobe.

http://boatingontheweb.com/ohio_river.htm has various marinas

I suggest that it was very imprudent for your friends to go out without current charts and without figuring out in advance where they were going to get fuel.

Travel Tips for Louisville

The correct pronunciation of....

by gregah

As you can see, there are many opinions, even from the locals. But JuliaL hit the nail on the head: LOU-ah-vull. The MOST important thing is that the "s" is silent, but the SECOND most important thing is to pronounce the last syllable VULL.... make it rhyme with bull. (Like they do throughout the south with Knoxvull, Nashvull, etc.) If you get those two things right, you can almost do anything else you want to and no one will think twice about it. Network news anchors say "louie-vull", which is acceptable. But I guarantee if you say lou-ah-VILLE you will sound like you're not from around here.

If you have a boat, drive up...

by John195123

If you have a boat, drive up to Captain's Quarters' dock, passing the dock, and at idle speed, continue past the restaurant, gas station (one of whose tendants is a complete jerk and idiot) and on. Soon you'll pass another set of docks on the left and you'll go under 42. Keep going, it's a nice ride!

Two Hahn's Mongolian Grill

by dzni about Two Hahn's Mongolian Grill

This restaurant is almost seen as an after-thought, hidden away in a corner of a small strip mall. However, I very much enjoyed the food here. You take your plate up to a bar, select your ingredients (noodles, meats, veggies, and sauces) and bring it to the chef, who'll grill it on a huge round grill and then give it back to you to eat. Anyway, very good food, although atmosphere is like that of many restaurants. ;)

Kentucky Derby

by lashr1999

This event has taken place since 1875, and is held yearly on the first Saturday of May. This is considered the first jewel in the Triple Crown of Thoroughbred horseracing. It attracts people from all over the country. The infield at Churchill Downs regularly becomes home to 80,000 fans for the Derby days. Where you sit determines what time you will have. If you sit in the seats, you may dress up and wear fancy hats for fun. In the infield you pay $40 to sit in the grass and about all you may see of the races is a cloud of dust. The races last about a minute each and it is about an hour until the next one. However, for many, one visit to the infield is enough to last a lifetime. Close to the gates on the Infield people actually watch the race but further away from the gates there is a wild party atmosphere. There are drunken college students and women flashing the spectators at times. Where were we sitting? We were in the Infield close to the gates when leaving we did get a chance to see some of the crazy fun mentioned above. This was the first horse race I had been to and it was exciting, even though my horse did not win! I just want to also mention a thank you to the church near the Kentucky derby I am sorry I forgot the name. However, the people here were so super nice! We just went there to use the bathroom after the 2 hour drive up and got to talk to some interesting men who were in WW2. They offered us some yummy pineapple upside down cake which we ate at the derby. The church offered free parking for people because it was god work to keep them safe, while other people were charging $20-$30 to park in their lawns. I wish there was a church like this in NY. Every time I go to church in NY it seems like all they was is money but if I found one like this I might go more often.

by Jim_Eliason

Located on the University of Louisville Campus, this museum has a wide collection ranging from ancient to European masters. It has a very good collection of Dutch and Flemish paintings. Admission is free.
