visit Churchill Downs -- the best known race track in the World - home of 'the Run for the Roses' --- visit the museum, visit in Spring or Fall and attend a horse race
For a REAL feeling of Kentucky attend in late fall on a chilly afternoon, watch the horses run and have a Mint Julep -- I did and loved every minute! D.Marie's Bar - see below) sipping bourbon and looking out at the Ohio River and the City Lights Di Marie's is in the gawdy Galt House Hotel but it has the world's best selection of Bourbon (no kidding)
Riverwalk recreational path......
by dzni
Riverwalk recreational path... this is a paved path that goes from the downtown Waterfront Park to a park in the west-end of Louisville. It follows the river the entire way and even brings you past the McAlpine Locks and past most of the bridges. I just went for a bike ride on it today and it was quite enjoyable. Roundtrip on Riverwalk itself is probably around 12 miles or so. Also, if you don't mind biking a bit on River Road, you can start a bit farther north/east at Cox's Park, where there's about 2 miles-worth of paved path.
By the way, I have to give credit to Bill Alden for the picture.

The Fishery
Oh, the fish sandwiches here are soooo good! I just ate one today. Good choice! I've been there many times, and love it. You can get a special, which is a fish sandwich and two sides for about $5.00 USD!
Good food, veeeeeeeeeeeery good food, home made tartar sauce and cocktail sauce. Cod on rye.

Captain's Quarters is always popular in the warmer months. If you come by car, just park in their large parking lot, note the nice cars as you walk towards the doors, and go in. They'll seat you.
If you come by boat, you can get service on your boat, or you can tie up, walk up and sit down to a good fish sandwich, other seafood, or land-based foods. It's all good, though we always get the fish sandwich. The service is fast and friendly, and the atmosphere is great. Captain's Quarters isn't too expensive, and it's a great family place.
Outside or inside, bars, good food. Fish sandwich.
The Belle of Louisville
by Tom_Fields
Originally built to haul coal, named the Idlewild, the Belle of Louisville offers narrated excursions on the Ohio RIver, providing plenty of the history and geography of the city. This is an authentic steamboat, built in 1914, and is a National Historic Landmark. Operated by the city since 1962, she races the Delta Queen from Cincinnati each year during Derby Week.
An interesting feature, unique among boats, is the Belle's authentic steam calliope. Originally developed for churches, this keyboard instrument produces a sound considered too bright for a solumn occasion, such as a church service. So it's been used in mainly in the circus. It contributes to the Belle's unique character.
