Travel Tips for Louisville

The correct pronunciation of...

by JuliaL

The correct pronunciation of the city is 'Loo-uh-vull'

Even though geographically Louisville is neither north nor south, but smack in the middle, we consider ourselves southerners.

College Basketball is the most popular sport in the city. People who live in the city itself are fans of the University of Lousville Cardinals, and for the most part people who are from 'the counties' surrounding the city are fans of the University of Kentucky Wildcats. March Madness is a certifiable illness in Louisville. People go nuts during the NCAA tournament.

Most native Louisvillians don't attend the Kentucky Derby. They attend the race for fillies held the day before the Derby - The Kentucky Oaks.

I do know that if you like clubs, go to the end of Baxter Avenue (well, almost the end) around where it intersects Lexington. Anywho, there are a number of clubs/bars here... Phoenix Hill Tavern, Have a Nice Day Cafe, Jillians, and a couple others. I'll add more specifics on different places if and when I visit them.

Steak 'n' Shake

by dzni about Steak 'n' Shake

Chain... Pretty decent food here, I'd say... they try to make the place reminiscent of a 50's diner, sort of. Anyway, this used to be the place to go (and probably still is) for high schoolers on the weekends or after football games. I'd have to say that shakes are the best thing to get here. Frisco Melt, cheese fries, and a shake

Louisville Slugger Museum

by sambarnett

Pitchers beware! You'll get no sympathy here. The Louisville Slugger Museum is soley dedicated to the difficult art of hitting. How difficult? A pitcher throwing a 3 inch diameter ball from a distance of 60 feet 6 inches at about 90 miles per hour. Your reaction time? Less than half a second.

The museum has lots of memorablia and exhibits. Be sure to try to batting simulator, which lets you "face" some of today's hardest throwing pitchers. The tour includes a walk through the production plant and a free mini bat. Afterwords you can order customized bats, a great gift for a baseball fan.

St. James Court

by Tom_Fields

This is an old Victorian neighborhood, with stately 19th century homes. Here reside many of Louisville's prestigious "old money" families. Each year, around Halloween, the huge St. James Art Fair is held here. It's one of the best in the country, and admission is free.
