Jenny Wiley State Park with many activities
The beautiful hills of eastern Kentucky are all summed up here in the Prestonsburg's Jenny Wiley Lake area. The lake glistens in the setting sun and includes many activities in the general area. Golf, warm season amphitheater, fishing, hiking and boating are among those family filled adventures. It even has a chair lift up the mountain over looking the lake.

Seeing a play at Jenny Wiley Theatre is a wonderful experience. The outdoor theatre is located in the Jenny Wiley State Park.
Eastern Kentucky
The State designated the highway from Ashland to Pikeville the 'Country Music highway' to honor the country music recording artists grew up in this region, such as Ricky Skaggs, Loretta Lynn, and Crystal Gayle. See the movie Coal Miner's daughter, for an idea what the area was like when Loretta Lynn grew up here near Paintsville. At one time this area was very remote and beautiful. Sadly, strip mining has flattened many mountains and left silt in some of the rivers and lakes. However, the area still has great beauty especially in the Spring when the redbud and dogwood trees are blooming.
If visiting this are, I recommend staying at the Jenny Wiley State Resort Park near Prestonsburg. Call 1-800-325-0142 for reservations. The park is named after a pioneer woman who was captured by indians in 1789, her children and brother were killed, but after 11 months in captivity she eventually escaped. This park overlooks Dewey lake where pontoon and fishing boats are available for rent. The park also has a 9-hole golf course, a swiming pool and hiking trails. In summer months you can see an off-broadway musical at the Jenny Wiley Theatre (Call 606-886-9274) for reservations or information. Professional actors often come from New York City and other distant places to gain experience. The quality of the production is often very high. Shows rotate nightly so you have the opportunity to see a variety of shows. Also, near Presonsburg is the Mountain Arts Center.
Southeast of Pikevilee at the border between Virginia and Kentucky, the Russell Fork of the Big Sandy River has carved out a 1,600 feet deep canyon which is the largest East of the Mississipi River, over 5 miles long. The remote Breaks Interstate Park is operated by Kentucky and Virgina. Call 1-800-982-5122.
