Travel Tips for Winchester

Drinking Ale-8-One

by Ericasmurf99

Drinking what? Yeah, when I try to explain this drink to non-Kentuckians, they don't get it either.

Ale-8-One, the soft drink unique to Kentucky, has been bottled in Winchester since 1926.

Still a closely guarded family secret, the Ale-8-One formula was developed by G. L. Wainscott in the 1920's after experimentation with ginger-blended recipes he acquired during extensive travels in Northern Europe. He sponsored one of America's first "name the product" contests, and "A Late One" was the winning entry. The drink's logo, Ale-8-One, was adopted as a pun of its description as the latest thing in soft drinks. Today Ale-8-One is operated by Frank A. Rogers, III and owned by him and his children.

Tours of the factory are offered on Fridays at 10:50 a.m. with advanced notice. The Ale-8-One Company Store is located in the main office building at 25 Carol Road, Winchester, Kentucky. The Company Store features many interesting specialty items to the public 8:30-4:30 p.m., Monday-Friday.

Winchester, Clark County

by Ericasmurf99

"Lots of family here..."

I am in Winchester alot because I have tons of family here. In fact, when I think of Thanksgiving or Christmas I think of Winchester.

This place would be a nice place to live; it's bigger than a small town yet smaller than a city. It is located just a few miles from Lexington and other nature places like Natural Bridge, Fort Boonsboro, and more.

"Winchester Factoids"

Information taken from Winchester tourism website.

The City of Winchester was created in 1793 from 66 acres of land donated by a frontiersman named John Baker.

Winchester's Main Street is known to locals as the "White Way" because of the 5-globed lampposts that were originally gas-burning lights. Originating from the poem "Up Silver Stairs," pinned by author Jesse Stuart. They were removed in the mid-1950s in favor of brighter lights. In 1983, 10,000 people gathered in Winchester to celebrate the relighting and rebirth of the White Way with two of the original fixtures and many replicas. Replicas of these lamps have been installed along Main Street, and have been used as the official"signature" of the city of Winchester, various clubs and organizations.

Winchester has one of the few elevated sidewalks in the Commonwealth of Kentucky giving this area the name "High On Main."
