Travel Tips for Baton Rouge

Tubing on the Amite River (Tiki Tubing)

by cynthi

Well, if you can call sitting in a tube and floating down the river a sport... there are several places to go tubing that are within 2 hours of Baton Rouge, but the closest is on the Amite river just outside of Denham Springs (Tiki Tubing). You can "float the river" or paddle down in a kayak. It's a great way to hang out with friends and relax, but I'm always suprised because at the end of the day (of doing nothing) you get exhausted! Bring refreshments and some flip-flops that you don't mind loosing... you rent the tube (or kayak) from Tiki Tubing. Just don't bring any styrofoam or glass.

Chill

by cynthi about The Wine Loft

The wine loft is pretty chill and laid back... go there on Wednesday for a wine tasting, or any day to hang out and chill. It is a good place to catch up with friends in the evening and chat (i.e., different from a regular bar) and you can catch a bite to eat. No LSU ballcaps allowed... I guess they are trying to class it up a bit (but come on people, we are in Baton Rouge).

Seafood & LSU Football... can't go wrong

by cynthi about Mike Anderson's Seafood Restaurant & Oyster Bar

Mike Anderson was a football player for LSU who decided to try his luck in the resuaurant business. He hit upon some winning plays... for what it's worth, Mike Anderson's is my Mom's favorite seafood restaurant in Baton Rouge.

Mike's is on Lee Drive (street names change in Baton Rouge, so the street the restaurant is on is called College Drive, which turns into Lee drive, which turns into Brightside). The link I provided is for the Mike Anderson's that is inside of the Holiday Inn in Gonzales (20 miles down I-10), but the menu should be the same. The Broiled Seafood platter... really it is the crabmeat au gratin, but I think there really is too much of a good thing... but the broiled seafood platter has a portion of the crabmeat au gratin and lots of other GREAT food!

Plantation estates in area

by BruceDunning

Many a splendor thing is right close to the city, in a little town called Darrow, La. Houmas Indians farmed this area under an allowed grant and sold out in 1700's to Mr. Conway and Lantil. The mansion was completed in 1828 after nearly 15 years of using the plantation to grow sugar crop. The Hampton family owned it and the 300,000 acres of land until selling out to John Burnside in 1857 for a staggering $1 million. The mansion survived the Civil War, and finally closed around the Depression era. It reopened in 1963 for tours, but burned in 2006. With hard effort from Kevin Kelly, the mansion was brought back to the original state in 2006. The interior was closed while we visited, but grounds were available to view.
The Manresa grounds is a retreat for priests, who worship in silence for 3 days. It is also a mecca for clergy to come yearly -about 6,000 show up.

The Memorial Hall - The Murals

by keeweechic

On the walls are two large mural paintings at each end of The Hall. These oil paintings show idealized scenes of family, rich farmlands and harvest as well as the arts of music, literature and sculpture.
