Travel Tips for Baton Rouge
View the Riverboats when they arrive
by Toughluck
Throughout the winter, the Mississippi Queen, American Queen, and the Delta Queen make regular stops on their 3 to 6 day trips up the Mississippi River from New Orleans. Except for holidays, the wharf is a busy place when the boats are in town.
laura plantation
by doug48
laura plantation was originally owned by andre neau in 1755 and is an excellent example of a creole plantation. the raised creole plantation house was built in 1820. in 1891 laura locoul sold the plantation to a. florian waguespack and designed in the deed that the plantation was to be forever called "laura". laura plantation has an interesting collection of out buildings and slave cabins. laura plantation is listed on the national register of historic places and is open to the public.
laura plantation is located between baton rouge and new orleans on highway 18 near vacherie LA.
Like catfish?
by IronLenz about Tony’s seafood
This place is neat. Their slogan is ”fried on this end, swimming on the other end” That’s because they have live catfish wells in the back. The place is a seafood distributor and home of Louisiana Brand products that also keeps a line of hot food.
Off the beaten path. It is open late, but there is nowhere to sit and eat. I suggest to pick up a plate and drive to Southern University’s campus to enjoy at one of the best views of the Mississippi River! Their specialty is the fried catfish.
Rosedown Plantation
by Jmill42
Rosedown plantation was built in 1835. It is an important Civil War relic and a VERY beautiful place. Being only a short drive out of Baton Rouge, you would do well to put this monument to the past on your trip itinerary. The gardens surrounding the main home are truly spectacular.

The Steps
by keeweechic
The grand staircase up the front of the building has one step for each of the 48 states which are listed in order of their admittance to the Union. Hawaii and Alaska were added to the top step when they were both made states.
