Travel Tips for Baton Rouge

greenwood plantation

by doug48

greenwood plantation is located about 30 miles north of baton rouge on US 61. this beautiful plantation home was built by william ruffin barrow in 1830 on a 3,000 acre cotton plantation. by the 1850's greenwood had expanded to 12,000 acres and had 750 slaves. in the late 1850's barrow became a politician who pushed for succession from the union. barrow died in 1862. after the civil war the reconstruction government forced the barrow family to sell the plantation. because of radical reconstruction after the civil war greenwood was unprofitable and had a number of owners. frank perry bought greenwood in 1915 and in 1940 opened it to the public. in 1960 the plantation house was hit by lightning and the house was not reopened to the public until 1983. today greenwood is owned by the barnes family and is operated as a historic attraction and a bed & breakfast inn. a very interesting side trip when in baton rouge.
directions take US 61 north past st. francisville then left on highland road. see the attached web site for more information.

Louie's Cafe

by laruna about Louie's Cafe

Louie's is a diner just outside the LSU campus and is frequented by students and faculty. The atmosphere is extremely informal and fun, and the food is a rich but special :-) A lot of food at very very reasonable prices.. Their hashbrowns! Dont be surprised at the size of each portion!

This Cheesecake is so good, it could kill.

by cynthi about Copeland's Cheesecake Bistro

Copeland's Cheesecake Bistro. (yep, the same Al Copeland who owns Copeland's. you can tell by the very tacky - i mean loud decor, but I like it still the same).
When I go, it is usually only for dessert, because it is so filling and good. The actual food is pretty good - the menu has a wide range of choices, but I prefer to eat at Copeland's if I am going to patron an Al Copeland owned location for real food (Copeland's is on Essen land, also a good place to eat but not an absolute favorite. If you want to go there, get the mile and a half high ice cream pie for dessert!) The Cheesecake... they have a whole bunch of different varities and they are all very good!

LSU's War Memorial

by Jmill42

Being a memorial, I will give you the decription given on LSU's website so as not to mess up any facts.

"The newest of LSU's military memorials, the LSU War Memorial was dedicated on October 8, 1998 in memory of those who gave their lives in military conflict from World War II through Desert Storm. The LSU Alumni Association raised the money necessary to construct the memorial and then devoted it to the University. Former President George Bush was the guest speaker for the formal dedication ceremonies. The memorial serves as the site of numerous military ceremonies and recognition events each year. Visitors can always be seen viewing the names engraved on the granite walls, perhaps pondering the challenging circumstances surrounding those who lost their lives in these various conflicts. Visiting the memorial is an emotional experience at any time, but it is especially moving during the hours of darkness when the flag, illuminated at night, flows gracefully in the soft breeze reminding all those who pause to remember that Freedom is not Free!"

While it has a little dramatic flare, I hope this offends no one, because in these times, you never know, and hope against, another memorial like this from having to be built.

Old State Capitol - Center for...

by John_P_LSU

Old State Capitol - Center for Political and Governmental History
Located high on a bluff overlooking the Mississippi River, the Old State Capitol stands today as a monument ot the past. Completed in 1849, the building housed the Louisiana Legislature until Union forces captured the city in 1862. That winter a fire gutted the interior of the structure. In 1879, the capitol was returned to Baton Rouge and reconstruction of the building was begun. The Legislature returned in 1882 and remained until 1932 when the new capitol was completed. Now restored to its original grandeur, the Old State Capitol is the state's archives for film and video. It houses both traditional and state-of-the-art interactive exhibts and a multi-media film presentation.
