Travel Tips for Baton Rouge

Say Sir or Ma'am

by am&pm

After living here in Louisiana for about 18 months I've come to realize how important it is for people here to be addressed as "sir" or "ma'am" or in some form of respectful address.

It's also very common to address someone with a prefix of "Miss" or "Mr." before their FIRST name if you use it.

i.e: I would be called "Miss Angie" by people who are familiar with my first name, my husband would be addressed as "Mr. Paul".

It took a while to get used to it but now I like it---it has a gentle, respectful sound to it.

tezcuco plantation

by doug48

tezcuco plantation was built in 1855 by benjamin tureaund. tezcuco was originally a raised creole plantation house with greek revival accents. sadly this beautiful and historic home was destroyed by fire in 2002. it is still worth a stop to see the the ruins of the plantation house. not open to the public.
tezcuco plantation is located between baton rouge and new orleans on state highway 44 near darrow LA.

A Touch of Italy!

by Jmill42 about DeAngelo's Pizzeria

The owners of this place do a great job of hiring. The sevice is always good, with the staff being upbeat and funny. Calzones, pizzas, pastas, antipastas, etc. are the order of theday at this place. Great meal and service for a great price. Since I have moved from Baton Rouge, they have started hosting live music and wine-tasting events. All of these things can be found on their website (address below).

Other locations include:
250 West Lee Drive - (225) 757-3877
11567 Mercantile Drive - (225) 756-2400
9634 Airline Highway - (225) 927-2762
13686 Coursey Boulevard - (225) 755-0977 The Super-Deluxe Calzone is my favorite, by far. It has pepperoni, oven roasted Italian sausage, onion slices, green peppers, banana peppers, fire roasted red bell peppers , all for $8.95. I hate mushrooms, but they normally come on this dish.

Pentagon Barracks

by keeweechic

The Pentagon Barracks were designed by Captain James Gadsden and were built in 1819-1823 as a major expansion of the Baton Rouge military post. Four brick buildings in a pentagon shape make up the barracks. Two were for quartering troops and two were to provide quarters for officers. There is a visitors centre and small museum there.
