Driving from the airport.
by gowanus7k
Recently visited New Orleans and hated the drive from the airport, loops and water everywhere, is the drive from the airport in Baton Rogue to the mall area pretty much a straight shot or is it similiar to New Orleans.

Are you talking about the Mall of Louisiana in Baton Rouge? If so the drive from the Baton Rouge Airport to the mall goes a little bit around the city of Baton Rouge, but it is not anything like driving from Louis Armstrong Airport in New Orleans to downtown New Orleans.

Great restaurant on the outside of the Mall called Bravo. I had a great dinner there on a business trip back in September, 2009. Check out the food pictures and review on my Baton Rouge page. Enjoy your trip.
Travel Tips for Baton Rouge
Looking at the Capital
by grandmaR
I asked the guard at the front door if I could go out and take photos and come back in without going through the metal detector again, and he said I could so I did that.
I stood at the top of the steps of the 450 foot tall building and took a photo of the grand staircase of 48 steps, with each step bearing the name of a state and the date they were admitted to the Union (photo 2). Alaska and Hawaii were added later on the top step
I also took one looking directly up at the Art Deco tower which is covered in Alabama limestone. The entrance door is 50 feet high (photo 3) On each side of the stairway is a statuary group - to the east is The Patriot (photo 4), a statue of a soldier and mourners of a soldier slain in battle; to the west is The Pioneers (photo 5), representing the men and women who founded Louisiana. Both statues were sculpted by C.M. Dodd and designed by Lorado Taft.
Actually I can't see either of those ideas from my photos, but that is what the websites say is there.
Rural Life Museum and Windrush...

Rural Life Museum and Windrush Gardens, located directly off I-12 and Essen Lane. It's beautiful and hard to believe such a place exists in the middle of such a busy area. Definitly worth a couple of hours to walk among the gardens and around the lakes, maybe take a little snack to feed the swans! Beautiful and very tranquil. The museum itself is very interesting and full of articles from the mundane to the elegant. Objects which were a part of life in early LA. Buildings include a church, school house, general store, overseers house, etc.
Great stuffed shrimp
by MJA78 about The Hilltop Inn
This restaurant was formally a bar and was converted into a restaurant about 2 years ago. It is located right on the Amite river diversion canal.
The seafood is great. Nothing is overly greasy and most items are homemade. Portions are adequate. The stuffed shrimp or stuffed crabs.
state capital
by gt6303c
You can take a tour of the state capital. It is the tallest state capital in the US. You can see the area where Huey Long was killed. If I remember correctly you can even see the bullet holes where the assassination took place. If you like history, a tour of the capital is probably worthwhile.
old post office
by doug48
the baton rouge post office and federal courthouse was built in 1894. the old post office has a beautiful italian renaissance facade which is a uncommon architectual design in louisiana. the old baton rouge courthouse is listed on the national register of historic places. today it is home to the baton rouge city club and is not open to the public. for those interested in architecture the old post office is worth a look when in downtown.
