Travel Tips for Lafayette

Lafayette is the largest city...

by tlf3082

Lafayette is the largest city in the area known as Acadiana. It is the center of Cajun Country. The local people are very proud of their Cajun culture and love to talk about their heritage. While some Cajuns do speak Cajun French, the majority of the people speak only English. This area is known for it's 'joie de vive.' If if like good food and good music, Lafayette is the place to visit.

Cajun houses

On this pic, you can see the schoolhouse (left) and Beau Bassin (right). They are a blend of Creole and American Greek Revival styles.
Spinning, weaving, quilting, and textile crafts are demonstrated in Beau Bassin.

Amtrak station

by heplion

Well, I other than standing around with some fellow passengers while they had a smoke break on a trans-US train ride I have never really been in Lafayette. I can say that the train station is quite the derelect building, complete with syringes lying on the floor, empty beer cans scattered about and little dark spot on the floor where fires of nights gone by burned to keep homeless people warm or light the evening for highschool kids looking for a place to hang out. If you plan on getting on or off at this Amtrak station I would STRONGLY advise haveing somebody meet you with a car, especially if you will arrive or leave at night. Not a place you would want to have to wait in the dark....

Isn't it great that Amtrak DID at least put a nice, brand new sign on this nasty old building???
