Oakland Plantation
by vigi
Apr16 morning, we arrived at Oakland Plantation after breakfast. A real neat & beautiful historical site. The founder was French descent. Many of the plantation’s outbuildings also date to the first half of the nineteenth century, the main house completed in 1821. Here I learnt that Creole not only can means food, it means everything from homes to culture.

St. Augustine Baptist Church
by atufft
Off the main Cane River road, just south of the Melrose Plantation, is a gravel road that leads eventually to St. Augustine Baptist Church. The church is still active but is part of the historical tour in this area. Outside the church is an old cemetary that includes tombstones dating into the 19th century. Across from the church is a bayou with wildlife. We weren't able to fully research the background of this church, which is apparently Baptist but has a saint's name. See website below for more historical information regarding the African-American in the Catholic and Baptist Churches of the area.
Night of Noels near Natchitoches!
by ATXtraveler
"Head out to Natchitoches at Christmas time!"
One of the fun places to tour if you are in Louisiana during the winter time is Natchitoches (pronounced Nack-a-ditch). They have a wonderful little downtown area that is right on the water, and also has a beautiful bed and breakfast district to take you back a few years.
Even if you are just planning to be travelling on I-49, take the extra 15 minutes out of your day and go down Santa Claus Lane! It will be worth it!
